Does anyone know of a free language translator?

I have tried babelfish. It is next to useless. I am just looking for a simple drop-down translator - I know there are many to choose from, I also know they can be loaded with malware, so I really would appreciate any suggestions :)Does anyone know of a free language translator?
I agree with David. There is no such thing as a trustworthy language translator. A person should only use one of those if they already have some familiarity with the language and they can recognise when something is wrong! Most people who use them here and put up the results don't realise how far out they are.

Well, you can always try freetranslation.com. Having said that - and this is very important - as a general rule, free online translations tend to yield disastrous and unintentionally comical results, unless you really have something extremely short and straightforward to translate. The reasons for this are fairly simple: these sites don't take context into consideration, have no sense of nuance whatsoever, and tend to translate word-for-word, which is a strict no-no seeing as languages tend not to be structured the same way.
A translation software or website is only good for word to word translation. If you ask full sentences, then it will give you wrong answers for the simple fact that you can't translate a language onto another exactly. You need to know the equivalent expressions, colloquials, grammatical constructions and and even a bit of Linguistics to do that properly.



Even I who is a French native, Fluent in English for almost ten years now, and who also took a course of French/English translation, find some texts very difficult to translate because of all these aspects. So how can a flawed translating software, however efficient it looks on the outside, can translate faithfully "thinking" about all this? It still takes another human to do the job I am afraid, and that's the reason why Translators are so highly paid for their services. It's giving them justice to their work and to their knowledge of both languages! (Whichever they are).
