But there is no such opportunity sometimes, and online translators can be very helpful in this case. Especially when you need to understand just the basic contents of the foreign text.

No online translators that I've used have been very accurate, because translation involves knowing the context of whatever it is you are translating -- which, I'm afraid, isn't developed in any online translator's AI yet, assuming they do have AI. I think asking someone who knows the languages will be better.

But even then it is hard to break into a very crowded and competitive field without a specialized university degree. Otherwise you find that you miss many of the nuances in the original language or render them inexpertly in your own language. I have to disagree with Brownie. I, too, am a professional J to E translator, and have done highly technical work for Nissan and Mitsubishi, among others. But I have NO special background in engineering. What matters most, obviously, is having the necessary language skills. If you have that you will find plenty of work! If you also have specialized knowledge, great, that will help you, too. There is always a great demand for translators (J to E, or E to J) in just about every field imaginable, so if you don't know about biotech work, maybe you'll do translation of financial documents. I translate such a wide range of documents from several different outsourcing companies, so I never know what kind of job I will do next. But they keep sending me work because they know I have the language skills (and proper English writing skills) to get the job done.

Study of English means the study of literature, but it's probably true that the English major graduates with the best writing skills of any other undergraduate degree. So that is useful. I know a few translators and they each majored in the language that they wanted to translate to and from. Depending on what kind of setting you'd want to work in, you may want to double major or minor in something in addition to the language (business, international business, etc.)
While in high school I'd say the most you can do is take language classes, which are usually already a requirement, and take them seriously. Learn as much as you can before entering college. All colleges have general academic advisors who will sit down with you and work out semester-by-semester plans. Use the resources of your future campuses.

I know a few translators and they each majored in the language that they wanted to translate to and from. Depending on what kind of setting you'd want to work in, you may want to double major or minor in something in addition to the language (business, international business, etc.)
While in high school I'd say the most you can do is take language classes, which are usually already a requirement, and take them seriously. Learn as much as you can before entering college. All colleges have general academic advisors who will sit down with you and work out semester-by-semester plans. Use the resources of your future campuses.
Why do people who clearly don't understand a language use an online translator& try to pretend they know it?
I see this all the time especially on facebook and here in the answers...someone who clearly doesn't understand what's being said in a conversation will go to a website and translate it (usually inaccurately) then come back to the conversation and type a response that's so poorly typed (tons of grammar and usage errors) then say they knew what the person was talking about , or in the case of yahoo answers type a translation that's totally inaccurate.

1. They are genuinely trying to be helpful. They clearly don't realise that, sooner or later, someone will come along who really does know the language, and can give an accurate answer. I think that it's a case of, "well, if nobody else has tried, at least I have."
2. They are just chasing points. That seems to be rather futile and juvenile to me, but, well, you know, that's how some people are! In a way, seeing their answer printed on the internet (for all the world to see) makes them feel just a tiny bit important. They make me think of people who write to a record request programme on the radio, and they say, "This is my third attempt at getting this record played", and a reasonable person might think, "Well, why bother? Is it so important?" But, that's human nature for you!

Well, you definitely won't find one online. Online translators are junk, even into languages extremely similar to English they spit out complete Rubbish. Mayan is a very different language, nothing would work online. The only way you could do this is by finding an expert in Native American/Mayan culture who speaks the language.

It clarifies everything in the King James - explaining Hebrew idioms ("sayings") etc.. It has appendex' for literally every part of the Bible - Both are must-have's for the Bible Student. Good luck, keep studying!!!

Tips for creating a good interface for a language translator tool?
I don't know much about in-depth programming, but I do know a lot about design and implementation. If you are designing a desktop program, use pictures, icons, graphics, etc. whenever possible. I know that's something that lacks in a lot of those types of programs. This same thing could be applied in a webpage translator as well, I suppose. :)lower eye liner

I suppose if you wanted to work for the FBI, Spanish, being the largest second language within the US, would be your best bet. They seem to occasionally need to deal with people who communicate better in Spanish.

a polygot (a person who knows at least three languages fluently), is rare, and the rarer something, the more something seems to be wanted because:
1)flexibility: a polyglot can help in a variety of situations in a variety of ways, giving an advantage to the FBI and saving them money; why pay for three translators speaking different languages when you can hire one who can do the same; it is faster and cheaper (though i suspect because of your friends talent he/she would still get paid handsomely)
if you want to pick a language that would be most advantageous in the Western World, Spanish and French would be most advantageous. With those two languages, (plus English as a native language, i am assuming) you could easily guide the FBI through situations in the western hemisphere, as the vast majority of the people in western hemisphere speak one, two, or all of those languages. A woman just walked into my office with a gentleman who acted as an English-Spanish translator for her. I felt very awkward as I didn't know whether to address him, because he needed to be able to hear me clearly and translate, or her because she was the actual customer and deserved my attention. If I want to be a navy translator what language skills do I need to have prior to enlistment?
Be warned: CTIs do NOT TRANSLATE. they sit in small dark rooms all day long with headphones on and they transcribe. they do not go into the field and mix it up with the locals unless you are ALSO a SEAL.
you must first get a qualifying score on the ASVAB then take the DLAB. if you do not get at least a 105 on the DLAB, you will not qualify for a category 4 language( Farsi, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, etc) and will not be offered a slot at DLI. If I want to be a navy translator what language skills do I need to have prior to enlistment?
if you already speak a NEEDED language like farsi, dari, pashto, urdu, arabic, or kurdish (turkish may also be one) they will just have to give you a test in your language to see at what level you speak it.
if you already speak this language then you are going to be an interpreter no matter what. you may not have it as an MOS but you will be invaluable to whom ever the commander is.

To check--no. But I would generally stay away from online translators. I'm a language teacher and I can almost always spot someone who has used one. Overall, I haven't been impressed at how they work. To prove my point, enter an English phrase into the translator, then take the French (or whatever language) phrase and enter it into the French to English translator. It almost never returns to the way you started. Translators are made to be 100% correct, either in the simplest form , or a more complex one, depending on what translator your using. A human is prone to making mistakes, even if its the simplest such as putting "la" instead of "le". Therefore, teachers dont want you using translators. Its ok to use it, providing you dont copy it ... or change all the answers to be 100% correct.
These sites are not always accurate. You can get some very different responses for certain phrases - so I wouldn't put a lot of faith in them if my grade counted on accuracy..
I personally would not. Often, translators don't get the verb usages correct. They fail to get the proper nuances of a language that you would have if you spoke the language. Your best bet would be to seek someone who has had the class before and did well, or better yet, someone who speaks the language fluently to take a look at your paper.

Well, like someone above stated, homework is supposed to be for your benefit. You can use translators or calcualtors to answer all the questions you want but you will ultimately be hurting yourself. I'm not sure if you are in high school or college but especially in college you are very much on your own and free to do what you want. You'll only be wasting your time and money if you use an aid to complete your homework.
claro que no!!! homework allows research but you shouldnt get used to it in my opinion,for your own good, you should only use it once youve finished your homework and want to verify how good you did.this way youre gonna force yourself to struggle and when you check with the translator you are more likely to remember at a test or a real life situation.cheers from brazil

To check--no. But I would generally stay away from online translators. I'm a language teacher and I can almost always spot someone who has used one. Overall, I haven't been impressed at how they work. To prove my point, enter an English phrase into the translator, then take the French (or whatever language) phrase and enter it into the French to English translator. It almost never returns to the way you started. Translators are made to be 100% correct, either in the simplest form , or a more complex one, depending on what translator your using. A human is prone to making mistakes, even if its the simplest such as putting "la" instead of "le". Therefore, teachers dont want you using translators. Its ok to use it, providing you dont copy it ... or change all the answers to be 100% correct.
These sites are not always accurate. You can get some very different responses for certain phrases - so I wouldn't put a lot of faith in them if my grade counted on accuracy..
I personally would not. Often, translators don't get the verb usages correct. They fail to get the proper nuances of a language that you would have if you spoke the language. Your best bet would be to seek someone who has had the class before and did well, or better yet, someone who speaks the language fluently to take a look at your paper.

It's my goal to major in nutrition/dietics once i go to college. But I would also like to be able to translate as a part time job as well. Would having a minor in Japanese Language allow me to do so? Or would majoring in both be better? I would say you need masters degree in the language, and you need to study abroad in a country where they speak that language for at least a semester and ideally a week.
As an undergrad, you may also want to take classes in international relations. A double major of your language and international relations might be the best thing.

Why do People Give you a Link to an Online Translator When you Ask a Language Question?
Those things are GARBAGE! They can't correctly give you the MEANING of idioms. When Translating a phrase, the Grammar is NEVER correct. Obviously, if you have posted your question on Y! answers you are computer literate and well aware of online dictionaries/translators. I'm I the only one who fells that people who post links to the universal translator or use it as a source to answer your question are annoying? Who here thinks if you don't know that language, you shouldn't bother answering rather than giving potentially false information.

I am so sick of telling people that automatic translators are worse than useless - they just don't want to hear that. And you'd be amazed at how many questioners actually ASK to be referred to a "good" automatic translator. The problem is we're used to the modern expectation that whatever you want, you can have it, NOW, for no effort. It makes me so angry!
But we might as well piss in the wind at Lands End, it's wasted breath, isn't it? There's no teaching the supremely ignorant.

I saw on Dragon's Den a man who had a business translating documents into many languages. He said that his company's online translator had only 70% accuracy, and he made no profit from it. The reason it's there is to lure people to the website... once there, you'll find you have to pay for a proper translation, or to be able to phone up or e-mail for a personal response. The proper translations, of course, have 100% accuracy, and can be any length, unlike the online translations.

The most infuriating are those that give a wrong answer and then back it up with an online translator as a source.
Besides trying to accumulate points, other elements come into play, such as getting an answer in first with a chance it will be chosen immediately, or trying to find an answer faster than anyone else irrespective of one's lack of knowledge. It is playing on the asker's naivety (who cannot determine which answer is the correct one), but sometimes there is a genuine desire to be helpful on the assumption that the asker may not be able to get any answer at all.
The sad thing is that, as has been pointed out earlier, the answer given by translating sites is frequently incorrect or misleading, and the person who gets it has not got the wherewithal to pick a correct answer, or the grammatical background to use the information provided.
What is really disappointing is to see a rubbishy answer picked rather than the accurate answers provided by genuinely knowledgeable people, or educated native speakers who really know what they are tackling. Although, to be fair, there are often experts , or "know all" natives who do make mistakes too. When I look at the profile of some native contributors, the spelling and grammar in their own tongue is often horrific, and the same people give advice (which is hardly better than a universal translator) on the English speaking site on the strength of their nationality.
In any case some people chose the answer that they like best because they like an avatar, or because they prefer to deal with their peers rather than teachers, "top contributors" or "foggies".
As you rightly say Yahoo is not an ideal forum, and the language questions have become rather trivial of late. I totallly agree. If you even read these mechanized translations, you can see that they're nonsense. Nevertheless, a lot of people ask for translation websites, refusing to believe that computers are not yet able to translate. Yet they're not.
Totally agree, I always thumbs down anyone that offers a machine translator. Sometimes I have attempted dodgy partial translations from languages I don't really know, like Romanian, or searched Google to identify a language or a word, but I only if no-one has already offered a knwledgeable answer - and I always warn that my answer is just a first hint, and needs to be looked at skeptically! But it's still better than machine generated gibberish masquerading as an accurate translation.

Hey, there is a very simple method to check the quality of an online translator! Use the same translator to translate your stuff in another language first, and then to translate the result back into your own language! If the translator really would work, you should receive your original text again, shouldn't you? Ever tried that?

San diego fire - sign language translator when captions exist???
I'm in San Diego and I've been watching all of the press conferences regarding the fires, and I've noticed that on all of the big ones (where ah-nold is involved) there is a sign language translator. I even remember seeing one translate the half-time show song during a recent superbowl. I don't mean to offend the deaf, I just wonder if this is a show of political-correctness since all recent TVs are capable of closed-captioning. How can I be a freelance language translator?
A friend of mine has done exactly that. He got a business license first. Then he went to all the area bail bondsmen, introduced himself, and left his card. He gets enough business now that he doesn't have to do anything else. All he does is interpret for Hispanics who have been arrested. can someone give me link where i can download it? by the way, being specific i am finding for japanese to english language or japanese to tagalog language... if possible, if it's already translated not in kanji or japanese characters, only romanized japanese because i still can't understand if it is in japanese characters... =)Is there any free language translator software?
