I do not think they would be any better than those horrible online translators - they can't tell a verb from a noun, or context, anything. You can live on a farm and farm the land, but you will not get an accurate translation for farm in both instances, of that I am certain. I have seen the garbage put out by those things - everybody gives them thumbs down.

Maybe 100 years from now they will come up with something like that, but not in my lifetime, I'm sure.

The term "Libellula saturata" is Latin, as Latin is used for the naming of things in the realm of the "genetic"...shall we say, as in botany, and in this case entomology...'

As I can't find an online Latin translation, I think it would be safe to say it make reference to where and who first discovered this particular dragonfly.
Well, that is a dragon fly last I remember. That being the scientific name, it is in Latin. Latin is used, because it is a dead language, meaning no one uses it as an everyday language. This is important because all languages that are active are constantly changing. IE: 50 years ago bad meant bad, no due to pop culture it also means awesome.

After posting, I noticed some else did and I checked the link that I had earlier, and the dictionary was horrible, it could not look up basic words like girl.

Side note, the reason there probably no online dictionaries, is because latin does not have any order to sentence structure, and relies upon endings for it's Subject, verb, indirect, direct and so on.

Also I looked up those two words in my old Latin Dictionary and they Libellula comes from libell, which means "little book" and saturata means "satire", so I guess Little Book of Satire. Perhaps a little help in the right direction: Uhler described this red skimmer, dragonfly, etc in 1857. The etymology (origin of names) for "libellula", diminutive of Classical Latin libella ('a small silver coin', 'a water-level', 'a plummetline'), is itself a diminutive of Latin libra ('a pair of scales', 'a balance').

"Saturata" refers to something full, saturated or possibly a swarm of animals. Why Uhler picked this name? Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe he saw a swarm of them balancing over water when he found it? ;)

My husband was a professional translator in the United States for 15 years, and before that he was a translator in Denmark for a number of years. Now we're back in Denmark and he's doing something else.

I think now they offer "certification", which means you take a really difficult exam, and if you pass, you are certified.

Why does the online language translator suck?

I bought a spanish magazine and I was sitting on this langauge translator site using it to translate the magazine so that I can learn words in spanish (because I'm teaching myself). but when it translates a complete sentence it give the literal translation and I don't understand what it means. so I have to translate word by word but it doesn't really make sense unless all the words are together.

Because words in one language can have a slightly different meaning in another.
Online translators are never very good because in every instance, any given word might mean something different, and the translator doesn't know any better. If you are using a translator, here's my tip: look at all the verbs, subjects, and adjectives, and see if you can come up with a sentence that makes sense to you. If it seems to be saying something that doesn't really make sense, it might be a figure of speech. Usually, figures of speech can be figured out if you think about them enough. But if you get a dictionary, they usually have some figures of speech, or phrases and their definitions. Automatic translators can only do so one word at a time, and there are many problems with this approach: most words have multiple meanings and translators have no ability to understand the context of a sentence to choose the most appropriate word; languages rarely put their words in the same order in a sentence; idioms cannot be translated literally; languages often use different tenses to mean the same thing; and there are a host of other reasons.

For instance, sometimes, in English, the same spelling is a noun, a verb in the present and a verb in the past tense. The computer doesn't know which one it is, so it will just choose one.

Sometimes there are several different ways to translate the same word, even if it is one part of speech. The translator simply chooses the most common one. It doesn't know if it could be wrong.

Also, it can't re order the words properly, to make them sound like they would in English.

This is why you must learn the language. Because translators can't do it.

A translator translates EXACTLY when there are rules and abbreviations. Translators give you the formal version. A translator will say the "goodbye" in french is Au Revior but, people only say that when being formal but mostly they say Salut.

How do you build a fictional language translator on the computer?

Hey! My friends and I came up with a roleplay idea, since we're into that and all. :P

We're got a ton of mythical creatures- humanoids (vampires, mermaids, fae), beasts (phoenixes, pegasi), etc.

Is there a way I can make some language translators for the languages we've made up?

umm, no this is not going to be easy.

If you're plan is to simply write out English but use different words, then it is pretty simple. It's a simple matter of substituting. You merely have all of the words you plan to use (which the English languages probably has thousands if not millions of words), then have substitutions for all of those words. Then when you want to write out a sentence, just substitute the words.

If you actually plan on writing a language, then translation between your language and English will be extremely non-trivial. Then there is the whole problem of defining your language. People go to college and get PhD's for analyzing this type of stuff (they are called linguists...compiler writers in CS are also pretty knowledgeable about this topic as well).

This is the correct category, but you're not going to get an answer because your question is extremely complicated.

A language is composed of a.) the alphabet: what characters will your written language accept, b) words, what are legal combinations of the characters in your alphabet (for instance xyz is not a "legal" English word), c.) grammar, what are legal combinations of words to make a sentence in your language (i.e. "a but your pencil leave" is NOT a legal combination of words), and finally, the HARDEST part is the d). the symantics...what do your sentences mean?

"I have a test today." - so what is the meaning behind this sentence, how do you differentiate that from "I have a house." What do these two sentences mean and how are they related...how do they fit into the same language, yet have very different meanings?

To translate between one language to another you have to know ALL of those things and in fact, this is impossible to actually do (i.e. there is no perfect conversion between English and Spanish...even though google has this feature, anyone who speaks both English and Spanish knows that this feature does not work all that well).

1) learn to write code

2) write your own program

1) hire someone to write the code

its not easy to write. you'd need a large data base that will cover all the words in all the languages. you are looking at a ton of code.How do you build a fictional language translator on the computer?
If the language is a simple word-based substitution cipher for english (or whatever your native language is), then all you need to do is construct a one-to-one 'dictionary' matching your words with the fictional words, and have the program scan the dictionary and convert each word accordingly. If the dictionary were large enough you would probably use a binary search or something similar in order to speed up the processing. It wouldn't be a difficult program to write. Then if you wanted you could throw in a few extra simple rules to add some more flavor (preferably making sure each rule is reversible, i.e. it can be applied to translation in either direction). Translation between two fictional languages would probably be accomplished by first translating into english, and then back into the other language.

However, real languages never match up so conveniently, and in the real world the problem is astronomically more complicated. Not only that, but it differs from each pair of languages to the next. For instance, the word 'student' in english translates to french as either '茅tudiant' or '茅tudiante' depending on whether the student is male or female, respectively. Now imagine that we want to translate the following english text into french:

'The teacher sent an email to the student because he wanted to discuss her grades.'

It's pretty clear to us that the teacher is male and the student is female. But how is a computer supposed to tell? A smart computer might scan the sentence to find the closest gendered pronoun. In this case it turns out to be 'he'. So the computer might accordingly use '茅tudiant'- which would be wrong. See the difficulty here? And this problem is just the tip of the iceberg. Machine translation has been an ongoing field of study for decades, yet still no one has found a magic bullet, and even the best programs still make a lot of mistakes. It's considered to be close to an AI-complete problem, which is to say, any computer that can do it perfectly would have to be close to human-level intelligence. For the most part this applies to artificial languages as well, which like natural languages are usually complex enough that no simple algorithm is sufficient.How do you build a fictional language translator on the computer?
First you create a word list and organize it according to grammar. If your languages have the same grammar then that doesn't matter so much. You create a program and have it ask you which language you want to translate from and which to. It then opens both those databases. You enter your text into the program. It parses it -- breaks each word into tokens, and finds the word in your database and then finds the equivalent word on the output database. If it doesn't find the word, fine. Just print it as it was originally entered.

That's a very crude and simple translator but for you it should work. Maybe have a code of some kind across the databases which associates words in one with words in another. You would do that by creating a record (in Pascal) or a struct (in C or C++) with two fields, a string which has the word and an int or string which is the definition key.

A Specific Language Translator?

I want to know if there's something in the world that will translate english text into a READABLE.

Example: I want to translate the term "End of the World" to Greek. What any other translator would give me is Τ?λο? του κ?σμου.

As for the pronunciation/intonation of the Greek words, I really don't know if any of the sites can really help you.

Regarding the problem you have now, I think you can basically start distinguishing the Greek letters and their way of being pronounced as the intonation is much easier since the syllable stressed is always marked.

Anywhere you work will have different requirements. As with any job, the more experience or knowledge you have will always be beneficial.

Within Canada, there are many translators and interpreters who speak only their native language and a second language (either French or English) because the country is bilingual.

I'm sure you can, depending on how desperate translators are needed. I for example know 4 languages (or 3). English, Spanish, Manderin, and Cantonese. If I were to compete against you in looking for a job, would they pick someone who knows 2 languages instead of 4? On this website, you can write what the character looks like and it'll show up. Then you can just paste the character after you find it into a translating website and it should work.

If I were you, I wouldn't choose Spanish. It's such a widespread language worldwide that you'll most likely encounter too many competitors for the same niche. I'd go for a language that has more potential such as Chinese or Arabic.

As a language services provider who employs many freelance translators I would say that you would not do very well with such languages as Spanish, Chinese, Arabic as there are plenty of translators for these. My bet would be any of the Scandinavian languages, you would make a lot more money ;-)

Can I use Google Translator to speak the correct language?

I use busuu.com for learning Spanish (I only speak English) but for some things I use the Google Translator. I was told you shouldn't use it because it isn't exactly correct.

I was going to type in English and translate it into Spanish and use the audio to help me get the correct pronunciation of words as well as busuu.com to see if I could improve any faster.

Well the way one of my contacts explained it to me when I was helping a different contact was that in spanish, you have several versions of the same thing, so an endearment is different on the formal level than the same endearment for a co worker or family member. I want to be an translator/interpreter but not sure what language I'd learn from scratch as well as German?

It's a bit too early to be thinking about this yet, but I'm just curious. I love learning German, but am wondering what language would be good to learn from scratch at uni. I know Dutch is similar to German. How do people choose to learn a third language if they've not had much experience of it?|||German is spoken a lot in Europe (my German teacher used to say it was ''the most spoken language'' in Europe, but I doubt that). Many German words look the same/are pronounced the same as Dutch words, and both languages have a 'ch' sound (but in Dutch they also pronounce the ''g'' as ''ch''). The ''r''s are kind of similar, but in Dutch it doesn't really matter with what kind of ''r'' you talk, even an English one would be fine -experiences-. German has cases, Dutch doesn't (anymore). Anyway, to make a long story short, if you want to learn a language that's similar to German, then I'd go for Dutch...but!!..

Dutch is only spoken in The Netherlands/Belgium/some parts of Western-Germany, Netherlands Antilles...etc, it's not that much of a ''world language.'' The most spoken language in the world, is Chinese, of course, but that's really hard to learn. Second most spoken one is English, third one is Spanish, and fourth one is French. I'd recommend learning French/Spanish instead of Dutch, why? 'cause it will be way more useful for you. I'm Dutch myself, and I'm studying French+English at the moment, and once I move to the USA, I plan to learn Spanish there. I'd like to learn German (it would be easy for me), but since it's not spoken that much in the USA, I chose for Spanish. So I would advice you to choose carefully.

Another but..., you really got to love to talk in the language that you'll eventually choose, 'cause if you think that you won't, then maybe... becoming an interpreter/translator isn't something for you (that was the first question they asked me at my university)...

I'll do the opposite and demonstrate what happens when you try to do a language translator that doesn't have any intelligence. There was an early attempt at an English-Russian translator. They fed in the English phrase "Out of sight, out of mind". They then took the Russian text and fed it back through, and got back "Invisible Idiot".

To do *good* translation requires understanding the semantics (meaning) of the text - and that requires intelligence of some sort (either artificial or natural).

The best language translators I have ever encountered for web content have been human, manual translations.

Of course, this isn't optimal. So, the second best I have used is Google's, actually fairly extensive, API for translating. It was good with certain languages, like Spanish, but when it came to others, like Russian, it couldn't match human translation.

there are several ways to go about a language translator. you can use compiler technology using a lexical analyzer and a parser with syntax-directed translation. Or you could use Artificial Intelligence or Fuzzy Logic or Neural Networks or one of the myriad other ways of handling this sort of task.

frankly, it's been done and I don't know what IBM used. IBM's Watson supercomputer recognizes natural spoken language and can also respond in like manner. Albeit with a Hal voice.

Language translation is a hard problem. I mean REALLY REALLY hard.

As soon as you try to go beyond faking it (like you are, recognizing a few pre-canned phrases), the job becomes 'uber-challenging'.

Even Google is struggling with this one. They keep getting better at it, but if you've ever played with their translation stuff, an put in something even moderately complicated, the results are at best amusing.

Google most likely has a team of really REALLY smart people working on this one. I suspect they'll be at it for a while.

i would love to become an air hostess or a language translater (i know 4 languages) and i am in love with airplanes. i would love to be one of those beautiful women in a plane. the only problem is that i am not neat and nice as usual air hostesses (i am more of a country girl) and so i dont know if i will be accepted. i am also a shorty (156cm) so some airlines probably won't take me.

When you choose a career, money should never be the principal consideration. Yes, you need to put bread on the table, but if you hate your job, all the money in the world won't make up for it.

Likewise, your parents can give you advice, but ultimately the choice is yours, and you will have to live with it.

Being an air hostess (or flight attendant) is about more than looking pretty and getting to ride a plane. It's about being friendly, outgoing, willing to help, eager to serve. It can also require courage and nerves of steel, if a plane hits turbulence or there is trouble on board. If you possess these qualities, then by all means become an air hostess.

Being a translator isn't everyone's cup of tea. (I should know -- that's what I do for a living!) You work alone most of the time. You work with words and ideas rather than with people. You make decisions every second about the best word or expression to choose. You have to deal with tight deadlines and thus pressure. You may not get much feedback or thanks from your customers. In the end, what matters is your own pride in the quality of your work.

What major to take to become a multiple -foreign language translator.?

I want to become a translator, but I don't know what to major in. I hear to major in a foreign language but I have more than one language that I want to learn(Japanese,Mandarin Chinese,French,Icelandic). What would be an appropriate major to have all these incorporated? Im interested in doing travel booking/agent,tour guide,air port assistance stuff, so I'm not really into International business,law,or medical.

I also keep hearing about linguistics ,but isn't that more for people who want to do speech therapy and more involved with learning the science of language?So should I something like international studies, relations, affairs or something?

I am a linguist for the government. I speak 4 neo-latin (romance) languages and english. Let me tell you that having a degree in any given foreign language does not help you get a job in that language, unless you want to teach it. A college education in the U.S. in any foreign language does not guarantee you will get a job as a translator; being fluent in the foreign language will get you the job.

I'm not sure if you speak any foreign language, but if the answer is no, I must tell you that you'll have a difficult time becoming fluent. People who easily learn foreign languages learned early in life; the older you become, the more difficult it is. I grew up speaking two languages, then learned more starting at the age of 15.

Your goal is to learn languages from three different families of languages: Icelandic is one of the Nordic languages, which are a subgroup of the Germanic languages (so is English), French is a Latin language and the rest belong to the Altaic family (with different influences from other groups of languages): let's just say that it will not be easy.

Your first goal is fluency. The fastest way to become fluent is to be immersed in the language. If you don't have a way to live in those countries, for at least 6 months in each, and unable to take language classes while there, you probably won't succeed.

Once you are fluent in your target languages, pick one, and get a degree in that specific language (it can't hurt, even if you don't want to teach it, it always looks good on a resume of a translator).

Since you want to work in the travel industry, then your minor should be focused on that particular field.

Translators don't get hired off their college education: they must pass a test based on the job they're after. For example: in the U.S. millions of people speak Spanish, but for anyone to be hired as a court translator, they must pass a state certification test that verifies their fluency in Spanish, English as well as their knowledge of the legal system and legal terminology (not an easy test); therefore, people who speak spanish here, but are not educated, cannot be hired as a translator in most well-paying jobs, make sense?

If you are not able to go live abroad to learn your languages due to financial reasons, an altenative would be for you to enlist in any of the armed forces as a linguist. In order for you to be accepted in that job, you must pass a test called a DLAB (Defense Language Aptitude Battery) exam, which will give the military an idea whether you are able to easily learn and retain a foreign language. If you get accepted, you will be paid while you attend the Defense Language Institute for a year, learning a foreign language. That is another route.

I was wondering if becoming a freelance translator is an okay thing, as in that I could make a decent amount of money, I understand I probably won't make a fortune, but I'm not looking to become a billionaire or anything. My first language is English (I live in the USA), I am pretty good in Spanish as well as a decent amount of French, and next year at college I will continue French, start some German, and probably later in the year take a Spanish course so I don't loose it or anything.

Just keep in mind that every company has their own translator and they dunt rly need their own.. also translating is a tough job, you have to be able to listen well adjust the translation you make and always keep the tone in a correct manner.. quick in thinking, no mental blocks attempting to remember what specific words were such as in class when ur teacher asked u what spanish ment in spanish, (espa帽ol) and half the class forgetting it although they've been in the class for 2 years.. also be quick with small notes that help you.. so when your standing in front of a crowd or such and someone is giving a speech and you have to translate that u can dot down some stuff fast in english or w/e language make pretranslated text that you will present and yada yada yada.. its a lot to do..

I'm trying to make a translator for a language I created, and I can't figure out how to do it. I want it in a normal text area or form, and when the user clicks the submit / translate button, the word(s) is / are translated into the corresponding translations.

Where a dictionary sometimes gives you several options to translate, the so-called online translators simply assume you mean the statistically most probable one.

But you have to store thousands of words (along with their

translations in other language, in your case TIGRIGNA)..

If you need just Word to word translation, Code will not be very lengthy. You can accomplish this task by writing just nearly 80 statements...

But if you want to translate whole of the document, then a slightly more lines are required...But keep in mind, that it would provide only word to word translation.

It's not the easiest job to get into, and not a whole lot of money, but it's doable if you want. You'd have to major in Japanese and then most likely be certified in at least JLPT Level 2.

To do research you'd have to have at least a Master's degree and a PhD would be more beneficial. You'd also likely be working at a university, but if you get into it then it would pay quite a bit.Language translator a good career in this economy? ?

Translating / interpreting are very different skills from mere fluency in both languages. Good translators do earn fairly well, but they are on call 24-7.

Usually one translates into one's mother tongue (not out of it!)

Another consideration is how well the other culture speaks English. If they are very proficient, no need for them to hire an American.

Perhaps sign up to teach English in Japan? JET is one very prestigious program. There are others. It would get you abroad, and not cost that much.

If you are in for money, I wouldn't try a translator/interpreter. You'd need to research the demand (Health care, IT, Finance/Accounting right now) and your interest and aptitude. I am fully bilingual (Japanese and English) but chose IT Networking career. Learning Japanese takes many years of studying and practicing if you are non-Japanese and want to be proficient enough to be a translater/interpreter.

You are partially correct when you say that being a translator/interpreter doesn't always guarantee a job, although there is always the possibility you may find a permanent position with a big company or agency. It also depends on what languages you master. Some are more in demand than others.

As a lawyer however, you can pretty much assume (and be right) that you'll always have work. Knowing more than one language will only guarantee more work.

How do I become a Multiple Language Translator?

I'm interested in becoming a foreign language translator.

But I'm not sure what to major in, and I keep hearing to major in the foreign language you wish to study, but I have more than one.

Currently my strongest language know is Japanese, and Ive been into that forever but still want to have proper college professor to teach me and hopefully to study abroad one day. But I also want to learn french( the second language I know most),Mandarin Chinese, and Icelandic (one of the languages from one of the worlds highest economic powers..well it used to be until all this economic crap took place), and possibly Russian.

Thing is I don't know what to major in. Sometimes I also hear to major in International business,medical, or law but I'm not really into those. I'm more into tour guide translator,travel agent, air port assistance kind of thing..is this possible?

And whats the difference between International Studies, International Relations, and International Affairs.Could someone give me a valid definition to each.And would majoring in one of those help me accomplish the translator thing for multiple languages.

First of all, I'd probably use a newer language than VB6. You can download the latest IDE for Visual Basic (VisualBasic.Net for free from Microsoft). You'll then need to create dictionary translation and gramatical rule files for the language(s) that you want to translate and create the logic for it. It is a VERY ambitious task for somewhat sho is just starting out.

While many online translators have gotten better in recent years, there is no real substitute for a human translator. Languages have many subtleties and nuances that computers cannot understand. A good example of this is a paragraph that contains the English word 'bodywork'. Computers cannot differentiate between automotive bodywork and different modalities of massage, which are also known as 'bodywork'. Big difference in meaning!

If you really are sincere about learning French, do your homework. Online translators are only an *aid* to facilitate translations. If you don't know both languages already, the translation(s) you get online will contain errors you will not be able to detect. Your French teacher won't be fooled. It's a very competitive field, and obviously not as in demand as during the Cold War. You would need to be certified in translation, which takes awhile. I know the UN used to have a translation course if you are in NYC. You should check with Russian departments in the universities near you, as they would have a good idea of how to do this, and what it would take. Usually you specialize (business, literary editing, etc.).
