You don't say how old you are ... if you are still in high school then concentrate on English. Make sure your verbal and written communication's skills are the best. Drama is also good because ASL is a very physical language - it uses gestures and facial expressions and you need to be comfortable with such. Public speaking is important because you will be voicing for the client also and you need to be articulate in order to be effective. Start now taking ASL classes - either at a JC or 4-year college. There are lots of specialities including legal interpreting services, medical, educational, etc. Find a field that interests you and take classes in that field as well so that you become comfortable with the vocabulary. It's an important and demanding job and you'll meet many wonderful people. Good luck. How do I go about starting a career as a sign language translator? What kind of education do I need?
Consider a linguistic degree. Many colleges will offer sing language as a course to take. Consider doubling up in Spanish and making yourself even more hireable! There are alot of private non-accredited schools that offer sign language courses. Churches who are larger may have need for this and it would get your feet wet in the business. Even is they don't offer it initially, you might be the first one they consider in devloping this part of their church. Also consider working with t.v. stations. How do I go about starting a career as a sign language translator? What kind of education do I need?
Take some classes and then decide which way you want to go Signing is a wonderful career and you will make a difference in people's life. How do I go about starting a career as a sign language translator? What kind of education do I need?
If you are already able to sign fluently and are looking for a career I would send your c.v to your local county council offices explaining in a covering letter that you would like to be a translator, also to your local magistraits court and hospital/doctors surgeries.
good luck x
